Théâtre Périscope
Solitude
Like every year, the challenge was threefold: first, show that Théâtre Périscope’s 35th season fell under a single theme even if the program’s lineup was dissimilar; next, make it stand out in Quebec’s busy theatre scene; and lastly, bring the program to a broad public audience.

In 2020, there was a further sizable challenge to tackle: remain anchored in the public’s heart and evoke emotions despite lockdown and the sudden closing of performance venues due to the pandemic.

Théâtre Périscope has been creating and performing bold, experimental, free-ranging and socially engaged plays since 1989 that turn the spotlight on the issues of the day. Each year, more than 10 unconnected plays and events, often performed by little-known actors or even audience members, are presented.
lg2 was asked to create and develop an overall identity that was unique, consistent, accessible and warm, for use in the theatre’s various communication tools: season brochure, posters, social media and website.

While Théâtre Périscope’s 35th season included diverse works, the human dimension and its multiple facets had to occupy a central place in all the elements. This focus on the human dimension was an opportunity to create depth and a unifying chord to the season’s program. It became even more pertinent as social distancing and physical isolation became the daily norm due to the spread of the pandemic. Shaking hands, putting our arms around another, receiving a hug, all of that was now impossible, creating a profound emotional vacuum in people.

The unfilled need for physical contact with others became the kernel from which the artistic direction emerged. The notion of solitude allowed us to demonstrate how the theatre remains in touch and responsive to what its public is living and feeling as it fulfills its artistic mission.

An illustrative approach was taken for several reasons: to evoke Théâtre Périscope’s DNA, to break with the photographic style generally used by other theatres, and especially, to take advantage of the medium’s expressive freedom to present the program’s elements using an original and sensitive visual language.

The gentle, warm colours, the outlined faces and bodies, and soft curves provide the background for the texts of the various plays and activities while tenderly tying them all together. The organic shapes spread out to brush against, touch, overlap, run into and bond to each other, even running over the page’s edge. The effect is a delicate, poetic language that speaks straight to the heart, to soothe and draw closer.

Normally, in a pandemic-free world, the impact would be measured by ticket sales and year-over-year subscriptions. This type of quantified result is impossible to obtain due to the closing of venues and the disruption of the usual diffusion channels for culture.

However, there is a result that is more intangible but invaluable: the wave of love created by Théâtre Périscope was met with great warmth and spontaneous messages of comfort from the public and the artistic community. The link was never broken; in fact, the opposite happened: it was strengthened. A propitious sign for the theatre’s reopening next fall.
